ALL ABOUT PE

WHAT IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION?

Physical Education (PE) is a subject that helps you learn various skills, concepts and values related to physical activity and health. Remember that Physical Education is a lot more than Gymnastics (Gimnasia), which is just one more of the many contents of PE, so let's call the subject by its proper name!

WHY IS PE IMPORTANT?

In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) wrote a report that showed some important information:

- 80% of the world's adolescent population doesn't do enough physical activity.
- Insufficient physical activity is one of the leading risk factors for death.
- Insufficient physical activity is also a key risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and obesity.
- Physical activity has significant health benefits and helps to prevent the diseases mentioned above.

So, basically, there's multiple health risks of not being physically active, and, on the other hand, having a physically active life helps reducing those risk plus adding many other health benefits.

HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SHOULD I DO?

The WHO recommends that high school students do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and include in their routine activities to strengthen muscles and bones at least 3 times per week. Additional physical activity will provide additional health benefits.

Finally, this same organization explains how Physical Education can help to change today's sedentary lifestyle and obesity levels by giving kids the skills and tools to be physically active for the rest of their lives.

Also, apart from helping you learn the skills to be physically active, PE helps you to make healthier choices, such as eating well, expressing emotions, being respectful, avoiding smoking or toxic substances like alcohol. That's called building physical and health literacy, and it's explained in a cooler way in the following video:

So don't worry, no matter what your starting point is, if you take the subject seriously, by the end of this year you will become a healthier adolescent who will be able to enjoy a longer and happier life.

WHAT'S MY RESPONSIBILITY AS A PE TEACHER?

My goal as a PE teacher is to make my classes fun, inclusive and challenging, in order to help:
  • Create a passion for active recreation and sport.
  • Assist all the students in reaching their physical potential in a variety of sporting environments.
  • Encourage a healthy and active lifestyle inside and outside school.
  • Promote fair play and sportsmanship in all aspects of competition.
  • Provide challenging situations for you to develop physical, emotional and social skills.
WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS PE STUDENTS?

Do you want to know you can be successful in PE? Here you will find a list of the five things you should do to get yourself a perfect score in this subject.
  1. Be Responsible: Respect yourself, the people around you, the rules and the material we use.
  2. Show Effort: Try your best to reach and keep healthy physical fitness levels according to your age, and try your best also to solve challenging individual or group situations.
  3. Learn and apply the basic motor skills needed to enjoy the different sports.
  4. Learn to value an active and healthy lifestyle and apply it by starting to make healthier choices.
  5. Help others any chance you have. Help other students to learn what you already know, help the teacher with the material, help a student get up if they fall or take care of them if they get injured. We all teach here. We all learn from each other.
